Let's hear it for some of the old guys, from days gone by, who could sing and play music. I had a number of participants at the Twin-Pick trivia quiz the other day. They liked the story of 64 year-old Louis Armstrong bumping those young mop-tops called the Beatles out of the #1 position on the Billboard charts way back in 1964. That was a real big news event because, once that British Invasion began, there were not many artists from the USA who set the charts on fire for some time. The Beach Boys and Bobby Vinton were holding their own and so was the Motown label. But, hold your own horses, later in the year 1964, it all happened again. Another old guy -- 47 years-old at the time -- knocked Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr out of first place on the charts. The Beatles were basking in the glow of A Hard Day's Night when they were suddenly dethroned by, shall we say, a more mature man. This singer who dethroned the Beatles had a child. The child was a rock and roll recording artist as well and made it on the charts. And that child liked the Beatles best of all. Dad told the kid one day: "Your old man has a great song and it is gonna knock those guys right out of #1." Fact is, much to the child's astonishment, a few weeks later dad did just that. Yes, it is time for Twin-Pick. This is your chance to get the right answer in spite of my rude assistants doing everything they can to keep you from winning. The quiz self-corrects. All you have to do is click on your chosen answer and, if you got it nailed, then you will see a video of the original artist. Get it wrong and you will be assailed by my assistants. You can try till you have it right. A. I Left My Heart In San Francisco -- Tony Bennett B. That's Life -- Frank Sinatra C. Catch a Falling Star -- Perry Como D. Everbody Loves Somebody Sometime -- Dean Martin E. Unforgettable -- Nat King Cole F. Talk To The Animals (My Fair Lady) -- Sammy Davis Jr. For more "Stories Behind the Music" click on the guitar Steven L. Smith Bellingham WA Home Inspections

Jeez, I got beat up again by 4 of your assistants before I got it right!!! They are really earning their paychecks with me around!
Dan,
That just goes to show that we old guys are not too old to take a bashin' too.
oohh... I got this one on the first pick.... mostly process of elimination... and then a guess.
Alan,
No guess involved for you had it involved Elvis.
Steven: At first, from the clue about how this star had a child who was a rock and roller... I went with Frank Sinatra, because of Nancy Sinatra. That was wrong, so I then thought of Dean Martin... whose son Dino was part of Dino, Desi and Billy. They were lesser known, and I cannot remember the names or name of anything they did... although I DO remember that they did have a small bit of popularity at the time.
Ahhh... Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime... (if they can talk them into it... LOL)
I just listened to the entire song on You Tube... and, of course, was in tears by the end of the song. Steven, that was truly a different time back then... it truly was. Thanks again...
Parts of me would love to go back to that time for a visit, but if I did, I really, honestly, don't think I would come back.
I knew this one! Got it on the first try.
Thank you for sharing I really enjoyed it I guessed and on the second one I got it thank you.
Have a great Thursday,
Kim White
Third try I got it and what a treat. I love Dean Martin. He must be the best looking man singer EVER! I saw his show once in Las Vegas and was seated down very close to the stage. He had so much charisma that it was unbelievable. One night I just watched old youtubes of his and drooled!
Barbara,
Dean's shelf life is good. They still call him the King of Cool.
Karen Anne,
I put that clue in there for just that reason. I knew that people would think of Nancy. Dino, Desi and Billy had a song called I am a Fool, something along those lines.
You did give it away, but only to us old enough. Grew up with parents listening and watching the Rat Pack.
This one was easy. I remember hearing this song at my grandparents house. Its a great song and very indicative of the simpler times. By the way you should know You Tube has removed the clip due to a use violation. You may need to re-load the clip. Good luck!
;)
These guys are all my favorites. Sorry the clip was removed. I'll have to my old al bums out and listen to it that way.
