In the wet Pacific Northwest, it is essential that roofers put metal flashings or even a shingle over the various rafter tails or fascia that extend out from the house -- typically at the ends of the gutters. When that simple step is neglected, it ends up that, inevitably, there will be deterioration and rot in those areas of the home . That photo above is an excellent example of the problem. Despite that, some folks do not learn. The photo below is a newer addition at the same house. I guess that people do not know what to be careful of, and what to do to make it better, when they do not know what they are looking at in the first place. Thanks for stopping by, Steven L. Smith

Steve---not to worry---the new one will look like the older one pretty soon and then they will match OK.
Steven: Sometimes its the little things and details that can make such a difference. Thanks for all the useful info you provide us. Have a Great Thanksgiving.
That item goes in about 98% of my inspection reports. I'm REALLY surprised when I see that small section flashed/shingled. In fact, one of the builders I work with finally made his roofer extend the shingles over the fascia ends after my explanation.
I was just thinking about how I could convince the local roofers to use kick out flashings around here. I asked a local roofer doing an inspection on a house I was inspecting about kick-out flashings and he asked me what that was. They don't like to use chimney crickets here either.
Happy TG
Howdy there Steven
I get to see alot of that around my area also. 99.9% of the homes here don't have gutters in my area. It seem that folks area just to lazy to put up the kind they can take down in the winter time.
Heres hopen you and your family have a real fine, and Happy Thanksgiving Day, my friend
Water into gutter. Got it.
