Especially in wooded areas or where people garden, they often like "natural" steps. These are likely to be wood, such as logs, or stones such as in the photo below. People can put in whatever kind of steps that they fancy. The fact is, however, that the risk of a tripping fall increases with these unconventional steps. Standard steps should have uniform risers that are not too high, virtually NEVER the case with these landscaping style steps. Also the tread will be too narrow compared to normal steps and, almost never, do they have handrails no matter how high they are. Often the surfaces are such that they are slick too. Thanks for stopping by, Steven L. Smith

I'm a avid gardener, and always enjoy reading tips and advice. Thanks
I agree, as natural and attractive as they may be, I have slid and tripped over many steps like this before!
It is also a good idea to hire a professional landscaper so that these problems are addressed. There are so many great natural and natural look options out there today. My husband is a landscaper and has seen it all. Thank you for the post.
We should be able to get contunuing education credits for reading your blogs. Thank for all the good information Steve.
I'd hate to try to count the number of times I've slid on wet leaves on stone steps. I'm more careful when its icy or snow covered. Thanks Steve.
Stone steps make you watch every step.....else you'll fall and bust your bones. I prefer smooth!
