Moldy Old Secrets

Mold is a hot topic, probably a hotter topic than it should be. Just how big of a problem it really is and for whom has been argued by health professionals and environmental scientists. What is mold, what is mildew, what are microbial growths? Enough already!

Despite all the big talk, I will show you a place where I often find mold. In fact, I would put this right up there with under sinks where there has been a leak or right up there with leaking roofs over attics or just plain poorly ventilated attics.

You recognize that location? That is under the tank of the toilet. It becomes more disgusting if the tank is touching a sheetrock wall and the icky stuff has spread to the wall. Bottom line: An inspector does not need to put his or her head in the toilet, but that head should be placed under the toilet.

Thanks for stopping by,

Steven L. Smith

Interesting Steve. Mold is nasty stuff and this is a convincing reason to have buyers order home inspections.

Steven, Ick!  Gross!  And can't you get rid of a lot of mold with Clorox?

Steve, you are right----very common place to see mold/fungal growth.  It can be an indicator of overall high moisture in the home or at least the bathroom :)

I agree with Lizette.  Yuck!  It was bad enough checking all my water heaters and now you're starting on commodes.  Be right back.

Howdy there Steven

Your mighty right about, as your photo shows. One should always look under the toilets in a home. Just like you want to look at the flooring under them, when they are on a first floor of the home. I have gone into many a basement and into many crawl spaces, and found mold right under the toilet because the wax ring had gone bad, the toilet has leaked.

That bathroom has been wet for a while.  Look at the corrosion on those tank bolts!

And I will keep that bottom line in mind.
