Where's The Key?

This post is not concerned about losing the key to the door. This could be a mere annoyance, or it could be a bigger problem.

When a gas fireplace is installed, it requires a gas shutoff valve that is accessible. The old-fashion key entry in the wall, for a shutoff, is common and I see it frequently.

The other thing that I notice frequently is that I do not see the shutoff key anywhere nearby. Obviously, for looks, people may not want to leave it in the wall. But if there should be an emergency, it would sure be a good idea to have that key somewhere close-by so every resident of the home could get his or her hands on it if need be.

Got your key?

Thanks for stopping by,

Steven L. Smith

Steven, I can imagine the home owner "putting it up" where they will always know where it is, or the kids won't get it.  How do I know that? That's probably what would happen around here if we had a gas fireplace.

I usually see it up on the fireplace mantle. Seems odd that people would put it in another location.

Hi Steve, I don't see gas fireplaces down here too often, but when I do, the key is always in the shutoff, ready to go. I think if I inspected one and didn't see the key, I'd note it something like "key missing, be sure to obtain key and have sellers demonstrate proper operation prior to close". jay

They are usually on the mantle.  And that reminds me that I'd better check and see if ours is still there.  In one foreclosure house I took the key with me to the office because I knew someone would throw it away.

Over the fireplace is a pretty good location, long as some kid does not get ahold of it.

See this fairly often out my way. Reminds me of doors with keyed interior side locks.

I think kids losing it would be a real problem, I know I would not lose it. Where did I put my mouse:)

I often look around for the key and not find it.  I also often see no key hole.
