Whatcom County Home Inspections: Fine Dining Termite Style

I am working on a video presentation involving wood destroying organisms and my friend Dan Suomi, WSDA, brought me some photos of extensive damage from subterranean termites. For every other insect pest present in the state I have good samples and photos of damaged wood.

But that is not the case with the "subs". They are found in Whatcom County, but not with anything close to the frequency of many of the other insect pests. Here are a few photos that were provided to me by Dan. In the top photo the termites are caught in the act. But check out the last photo, the mud tube that they use for going from underground up into the lumber.

Thanks for stopping by,

Steven L. Smith

Hi Steve, Those are great photos. I inspected a 1900 home  a couple months ago riddled with termites. Let me know if you need any more photos of subs, I've got a bunch. I took a few of live subs coming out of the wood, but those little devils were so fast, the pictures look like blurred dust! jay

Steve,

Great photos. Funny I have seen more Termites than I thought I would due to the dry climate over here. But Dan was right they are here is greater numbers than I would of expected.

Thanks for the post,

Don

You sure those weren't some of your plastic Halloween termites with red eyes?

Steven,

I would love to hear more details on where this was found. Dan told me they found some in Mt Vernon but never heard of anything further north. We had subs in most house in Northern California but never saw any hint of them in our little patch of the PNW.
