Stories Behind the Music -- Elvis Was #1 Fifty Years Ago Today

How time flies. Isn't that true? I was sitting here today, my mind wandering, and I decided that I would like to see what was the #1 song in the nation exactly 50 years ago today.

The answer: "It's Now or Never" by nobody other than the King himself, Elvis Presley. It ended up being the biggest selling of all of Presley's hits. "It's Now or Never" topped the American charts for five weeks and the UK charts for eight weeks. Sales topped 20 million units.

This video, despite being a composite or out-of-sync, does have shots of Elvis, years later in his jumpsuit era. It is the original tune and it captures the sound of the year 1960.

Wow. I wasn't even born fifty years ago. I am now going out to check out what was the number one song forty some years ago. Thanks for giving me the idea. I think I have a list of what was popular the day, month and year I was born somewhere.......

Steven, didn't I see somewhere that Nutsy was in the band that played for Elvis?

Andrea, You are very wise, unlike the Buell's, Quarello's and Ford's. Actually it was Nutsy's grandpa who was so good that he would actually stand in for Elvis when the big guy had a cold.

Don, I wasn't born 50 years ago neither.... Okay, getting close though.  Thanks for the Elvis tribute...

Now that makes sense, his grandfather. Nutsy comes from such a great line of Wallendas. I am impressed.

I for one don't understand why the Buell's, Quarello's and the Ford's are so mean to Nutsy. Nutsy is a well traveled, highly intelligent little man. He is energetic, kind to all manner of men and furry critters, why Nutsy would give someone the shirt off his back! And to think, Nutsy is so selfless that he even helps Mr. Buell out when he gets overloaded or to tired to take care of his workload. And all this without any complaints.

This world is a bit brighter with Nutsy in it. And anyone who says otherwise should have their butts whomped on.

Steve, you have made my day! Seeing that Elvis video brought all my memories back and made me realize again why we girls loved him and drooled over him and dreamed of him. I so wanted to see him in concert and never got to. My hubby (and this makes me mad all over again) waited too lated to try for tickets when he came to Little Rock for a concert. Now tell me honestly, how many guys could look like that in a jump suit today? Fortunately this one shows him in the early jumpsuits, not the later ones when he looked more like the guys of today. Thanks for that memory!!!

Elvis - he will always be part of my youth.  I liked him in his earlier days, but all memories are good!  Thanks for the blog and bringing back good memories
