I was going through my photos from a trip to Italy and I ran across this one. This is a street in the city of Assisi, a town at high elevation. To get where you want to go in those mountain towns, you have to do some work that involves huffing and puffing.

On this particular Sunday morning it was quite evident that my wife and I were the only ones who chose to tread upon the infamous "road less traveled".

Now that is beautiful. What a good memory
Assisi is a beautiful little town and I remember the hilly streets. Your photo captures it well.
Steve, do you know anything about the history of how the street was built? Looks like those flat areas next to the steps might have originally been gutters for runoff and sewage prior to installing the underground drainage.
Charlie,
Being an ancient town you are probably right. They talked about that in Pompeii when we were there. But Assisi is quite beautiful and they do not bring up the word sewage.
I was wondering if the flat areas on the sides of the streets were for handicapped people. Then I read Charles' comment...and I believe he is right.
Nice post! That steep staircase may end up somewhere very lovely...unless we try it, how will we know what we missed?
With the buildings right on the street it's a pretty narrow passage.
James,
The roads they drive on are the same, but no steps. Getting around in a car can be hell over there.
Wow, they sure have strict handicapped-persons laws, with wheelchair ramps on both sides of the stairs!
I'm the only one in this family I would let attempt that road in a car. Looks more cart than car Steve.
Did you get to see St. Francis?
