For some reason certain events out of the past stick in the mind. Not sure why this one did, but it did. I remember being in Parkview Elementary, Bellingham, in fifth grade. This was pre-Beatles and the girls -- much more music fans than we boys who were into boxing and wrestling -- were debating the merits of their favorite musical groups. Even though I was not into music at the time, I was into boxing and wrestling too, I remember who the girls were wrapped up in musically speaking. That was then, but a year later musical tastes sure changed after the Beatles. In no particular order, the groups they liked best in 1963 are at the links below. Can you say heavy influence by folk music?
The ultimate answer as to which group was best is still Blowin' in the Wind.
This one might surprise you. The Kingston Trio?
There was a green movement even back then.
Now, if anybody cares what the boys were listening to, that is easy to answer. When we were not boxing and wresting, we were into macho music. Macho music like this one from the future Sausage King of the USA.
In the next year, the musical horizons shifted drastically. For a glimpse into that future, click here.

Steve the only thing I can tell you about Big Bad John is that he got the "Bad" part right:)

I remember all of them well. Congratulations on passing the 200,000 mark!!!
You are quite right. We listened to Kingston Trio a lot. "he come down from the glory" was a song that surprised people when my brothers and sisters and I went Chrismas Carolling. Not your standard carol. But once the Beatles were in Ed Sullivan, and I remember that night well, everything turned and changed.

Steven, thanks for the walk down memory lane! My dad was in a group in the 50's, loved music so I clearly remember the Kingston Trio, the Lettermen, The Association and other groups that were popular in the early 60's. Growing up 20 minutes north of Boston, I am very familiar with Charlie! I was just in Boston earlier this month and rode the T, Charlie is the icon on the pass.

Hhhmmm, wonder how a person goes from Singing Songs to pedaling pork? Must be more money in playing with his sausage than singing.

I still like the Sausage Man and his product.
Ardell, thanks. I remember your saying before that you liked and remembered folk.

Steven,
My Dad had a record store when I was a kid. We liked just about everything from Big Band Music to Gospel, from Elvis to Sinatra, and from Bobby Rydell to Johnny Mathis back in those days before Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel and Crosby, Stills & Nash took over the house.

Steve ~ I just noticed that you eclipsed 200,000 points. Way to go. I know that I have been quiet on ActiveRain recently, but I have been selling real estate, so everything is good here. Anyway, I just wanted to say... Congrats!

Steven, because I was overseas in 63 we got American music about a year later. So in 1964 when PP&M, et al hit town, we all learned to play guitar and would sit around and comunally sing all those songs. It was a nice period, before Vietnam broke wide open, when we were still pretty much innocent. To this day I still sing along to PP&M, they were the best. Well then along came the Mamas and the Papas, I sing along to them too!

Terry,
At my page you will find a number of music blogs, on the side, under pacific northwest music legend. Fact is, some of the blogs in the category are not from the PNW, but I wanted some way to keep track of them. You asked how I know this stuff, I worked in radio for years and I read alot about the music, the business. I am planning to write a number of blogs on interesting stories. In the 1960's, had you told me that I could tell these stories and often fill them in with photos, I would have thought you crazy. But youtube really makes story telling fun. Did you see the one I did today on Simon and Garfunkel.
